Aluminium chloride is a potent antiperspirant used in the treatment of severe hyperhidrosis, which can be purchased over the counter.
It can cause skin irritation, and the patient should be warned to avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes, and to avoid use on broken or irritated skin. The patient should not shave the axillae or use depilatories within 12 hours of application.
Botulinum toxin is indicated for the treatment of hyperhidrosis affecting the axillae when all conservative treatments have been tried without success. For more information see the Low Priority Procedures Policy.
