4.3.2 Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors
MAOIs should only be used on recommendation of a specialist.
Hypertensive crisis can occur following ingestion of tyramine or other pressor amines in foods or medication. Patients should avoid consuming large amounts of tyramine-rich food (such as mature cheddar, yeast extracts, red wine and fermented soya bean products) and sympathomimetics (such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine).
